15-20 November 2014

General overview

`Wilder Being` was a collaborative project between Orkney College UHI and the Pier Arts Centre and part of `Being Human`, the UK`s first national festival of the humanities.

The event was `kicked off` at the end of August 2014 with a two day workshop in Sandy.
Archaeologists, artists, environmental scientist and the community were brought together to observe and record  the artifacts and materials found on the beach. This was carried out through various techniques from 3D scanning, photography, drawing and text.

Mark Jenkins documented the workshop and produced a short film which also tells the story of the Lopness monster, a creature who inhabits the sea and recovers debris from the coast of Sanday.

BA Fine Art Textile students from OC then drew inspiration from this to create a Wilder Being which was to be used as part of the exhibition at the Pier Arts Centre.

The project was to raise the profile of humanities research by engaging a diverse audience in the practices of recording and to think about the issues related to sustainability and climate change.

My Wilder Being story!

`You look like the wild man fae Borneo` its something my mother often says to me and a quick look in the mirror after towel drying my hair, she could be right, its a mass of long unruly tangles. So this was the start and the inspiration behind my wilder being costume.

My initial idea was to create a `head piece` that could be worn by anyone, male or female to change them into or become a wilder being. This soon grew `arms and legs` and developed into a full length costume.

Development

The hair - I took a number of `selfies` and liked the angle of this one
it had a menacing air about it.

Playing around in photoshop produced this image and
was the `essence` for the costume.

A Tyvek protective suit, spray paint, plastic mask, hessian, black dye and
 many hours of work later.....................................................

I was really chuffed with the way this turned out!

 I also made another version...........
taking a heat gun to a suit I`d over spray painted, resulted in this piece!

A crinkly and deformed creature!

Installation at the Pier Arts Centre

I decided to exhibit the two pieces together with one over looking the other.
It was to depict a scenario of `life and death` and to evoke a feeling of
uneasy curiosity.

And to top it all...........

I was delighted when the Pier Arts Centre chose my image
for their flyer, advertising the exhibition.
